WAZU is Matt and Rizz – an Australian/American glam/grunge/electronica/new wave duo based in New York City, by way of Sydney.
Matt and Rizz met as freshmen at The University of New England in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. At the official end of the year party for their class, the two met and decided to form metal band, Open The Gates; Matt would play drums and Rizz would sing lead. Matt soon realized Rizz was the missing ingredient for one of his bands, Captains, and after joining that band as well, she became his “not-so-secret weapon.” Captains went on to play the Australian scene with a number of experimental and influential Sydney bands, including porno-gypsy folkers “Rica Tetas” and sci-fi metal band “Darth Vegas.”
Aside from Open The Gates and Captains, Matt also performed alongside drummer Bryan Ferrysexual in the band Supermassive. Bryan, born Glenn Abbott, was a pioneer in the Sydney music scene, best known for his role in the controversial, boundary-pushing, commercially successful band Machine Gun Fellatio. Rizz, on the other hand, spent her free time experimenting and honing her sound-design skills as well as writing for local indie films and fashion shows, including a runway show for the University of Technology Sydney.
After playing as Captains for two years, two records, and a North American tour, Matt and Rizz decided to officially become a duo and further explore the chemistry and ideas that so naturally occur between them. In their first week as WAZU, the duo performed seven shows in six nights at the Top 10 “Best of the Fest” Festival at Toronto Indie Week 2010. “We showed up planning to play three shows, but [we] kept winning!” Shortly after, the band performed as part of the CMJ Festival at Lower East Side staple The Living Room, the Neon Reverb Music Festival in Las Vegas, and the Dropout Party at Don Hill’s in New York City.
In 2011 WAZU released a series of self-produced singles, three of which were re-recorded, re-mixed, and re-mastered by legendary producer Kevin McMahon (Titus Andronicus, Real Estate, Swans, The Walkmen) released as the WAZU EP on January 10, 2012 via Anti-Language Recordings. If you’re a fan of Talking Heads, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, M83, Metric, Phantogram, Muse, or MGMT, check it out, and be sure to look for WAZU’s debut LP, also produced by Kevin McMahon, out in the Spring of 2012.
"..WAZU crafts an almost scary electro-rock with industrial tinges and a pop soul. Their guitar sound alone commands awe, while the overall apop-calyptic mood of their music brings to mind that masterpiece of the ' 80s that is The The's "Infected".
