'...AND BEFORE ELF...THERE WERE ELVES' - a collection of previously unreleased blues-rock tracks featuring the late Ronnie James Dio - is finally being released!
These rare honky-tonk cuts are taken from Dio's earliest days when he was both bassist and vocalist with The Elves, the band he formed with Doug Thaler, Gary Driscoll, Nick Pantas and his cousin David "Rock" Feinstein. The band was originally called The Electric Elves, but was later shortened to The Elves, and finally Elf.
In 1972, legendary record executive Clive Davis signed Elf to Epic/Sony Music, however Ronnie would eventually set his sights on a tougher, metallic sound, fronting the likes of legendary bands Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven & Hell.
The songs on the album are a mix of both studio and live tracks that have been remastered by long-time Dio engineer, Wyn Davies.
The album includes a 3-D lenticular hologram on the cover featuring alternating shots of a young Dio taken from the first Elf album.
'And Before Elf…There Were Elves' was released by Wendy Dio's Niji Entertainment Group on October 25th, 2011.
