Growing up in Minneapolis, popular rocker and alum of NBC-TV's 'The Voice', Tim Mahoney, grew up idolizing the rock band Boston. So, the untimely death of Boston's lead singer, Brad Delp in 2007 hit Mahoney harder than most casual fans of the band.
Ten years later, Mahoney is thrilled to announce the release of "Right By My Side," a single that he and recorded with original/former Boston guitarist Barry Goodreau, on March 3rd, 2017.
Mahoney and Goodreau (who is also Delp's brother-in-law), hit it off after meeting at a benefit show in Minneapolis in 2015, and wound up staying in touch. After talking for a while, Mahoney decided to write a song to honor Delp's memory, with input from Goodreau. "I think we clicked because I really wanted to know about Brad and what happened," said Mahoney. "He just opened up on the full story of Boston and Brad."
The two shared ideas online, and sent files back and forth, with Mahoney's long-time producer Eric Blomquist at River Rock Studios, facilitating. The title came from the perspective of Delp always being right by Goodreau's side on stage. In addition to Mahoney having a similar vocal style to that of Delp, the track itself also has that trademark Boston guitar sound. "It gave me chills the first time I heard it," said Mahoney.
Mahoney already has drawn interest from heritage Minneapolis classic rock station KQRS, which had Mahoney and Goodreau on the air to play the track and to discuss it, in advance of the March 3 release date, when fans can purchase and download the track via iTunes, Amazon, and other online retail outlets.
Proceeds from sales of the single will benefit the Brad Delp Foundation, which awards grants and funding for school music programs. Mahoney, who is passionate about the charity work he does in the Twin Cities, was thrilled that the single will help to raise money for a good cause, and Goodreau agrees completely. "I really like the song, but more importantly that it's for Brad," he said.
